Something Worth Reading

May has always held a special place in my heart. It is the month I was born, the month I got married, and the time each year when I'm reminded just how meaningful it is to celebrate being a mom. There's something about May that feels especially full—of life, reflection, and gratitude.

A few years ago, we began a tradition of honoring local mothers in this issue, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. This year, we are proud to highlight mothers who lead—women who are not only raising families, but also helping power businesses and shape the communities we call home. Motherhood looks different for everyone, but one thing remains true: it is one of the most important, meaningful, and impactful roles there is. For me, it is the greatest honor of my life.

Watching my boys grow, evolve, and step into new stages fills me with a kind of pride that's hard to put into words. At the same time, like so many parents, I find myself wishing I could slow time down, even just a little. Since I can't, I've learned to be present—to hold tight to each moment and truly cherish the everyday memories that, in the end, mean the most. As you read through this issue, I hope you take time to celebrate the moms in your life—not just on Mother's Day, but every day.

This edition also carries a more reflective tone as we honor the life of Maggie Vandergon, a true pillar of the North County and a devoted mother. Her legacy of generosity, strength, and love for this community will not be forgotten. Stories like hers remind us of the profound impact one person can have on so many.

We also look ahead to one of our cherished traditions—Best of the West Antique Equipment and Tractor Show at Santa Margarita Ranch. Each Memorial Day weekend, families come together to celebrate our heritage, experience the history of agriculture firsthand, and reconnect with the roots that define our community. It's a meaningful reminder of where we come from and the values that continue to guide us.

Memorial Day itself has taken on a deeper meaning for me over the years. It is more than a long weekend—it is a moment of collective pause. A time to remember, to honor, and to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many. In today's world, that reminder feels especially important.

Having grown up here, moved away, and then returned in 2009 to build a life, raise my family, and grow a business, I'm constantly reminded of how fortunate we are. From the rolling hills of Atascadero, Templeton, and Paso Robles, to the people who show up for one another day after day—this is a place where community truly matters. It's where families and businesses grow side by side, where connection still means something.

I can't think of a more beautiful or meaningful place to raise a family and build something lasting. Giving back to this community is not just something I love—it's something I feel deeply honored to do. Being in this role, telling these stories, and shining a light on the people who make this place so special is a privilege I don't take lightly.
