VFW Post 2814 Highlights a Month of Service, Community, and Remembrance

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2814 in Atascadero is proud to reflect on a meaningful month of service, community engagement, and remembrance throughout May. From volunteer projects and youth programs to honoring those who served our nation, the Post continues its mission of supporting veterans, their families, and the greater community.

The month began with a strong display of volunteerism during the Post’s Day of Service on May 2. Members of the Post and Auxiliary came together to complete a community improvement project, demonstrating the VFW’s commitment to service beyond the uniform.

Continuing that spirit of community involvement, Post 2814 successfully completed its Adopt-a-Highway efforts along California State Route 41. Sponsored jointly by the Post and Auxiliary, the project focused on maintaining a newly adopted stretch of roadway near the Post and reflects the organization’s dedication to civic pride and environmental stewardship.

The Post remains a gathering place for veterans and community members through its regular weekly events. Tuesday evenings feature dinners at 6 p.m., while Wednesdays bring the popular Burgers and Brats lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing opportunities for fellowship and connection.

May also included a special Mother’s Day Brunch, held on May 10, honoring the mothers and families whose support and sacrifices strengthen the veteran community. On May 16, the Post observed Armed Forces Day, recognizing the men and women currently serving in the United States Armed Forces and reaffirming the VFW’s support for those in uniform today.

Community support efforts continued with a Vitalant Blood Drive on May 24, offering residents an opportunity to make a lifesaving contribution. The Post is also honored to support the Central Coast Honor Flight program and will participate in its upcoming gala at the Estrella Warbirds Museum on June 6, helping recognize veterans whose service and sacrifices have helped preserve our freedoms.

On May 23, Post members conducted a Buddy Poppy Drive at Vons in Atascadero. The Buddy Poppy program raises funds to assist veterans in need while serving as a powerful symbol of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

As Memorial Day approached, members placed American flags throughout Pine Mountain Cemetery, where more than 750 veterans are laid to rest. The annual Memorial Day ceremony brought the community together to honor those who gave their lives in service to the United States.

The ceremony featured participation from Boy Scout Troop 50, a flyover by pilots from the Estrella Warbirds Museum, Taps performed by David McNamara, and an invocation by Chaplain Steven Mills of Cornerstone Church. Distinguished guest speakers included Colonel Wintzer of the 223rd Regional Training Institute at Camp San Luis Obispo. Following the ceremony, the Post welcomed attendees to a community barbecue, providing an opportunity for fellowship and reflection.

Beyond its events, VFW Post 2814 remains deeply committed to serving veterans and strengthening the community throughout the year. The Post proudly sponsors youth programs such as Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy, encouraging young people to engage with veterans and reflect on the values of service, citizenship, and patriotism. This year’s theme, “What I Learned from a Veteran About America,” invites students to explore the lessons and experiences shared by those who served.

The Post also recently completed a successful youth art program, recognizing local students for their creativity and patriotic spirit. In addition, Post 2814 participates in community recognition programs that honor outstanding first responders — including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel — as well as exceptional educators through its Teacher of the Year program.

Advocacy remains a cornerstone of the VFW mission. Post 2814 actively supports legislative efforts at both the state and national levels, helping ensure veterans’ voices are heard in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. Through these efforts, the organization works to advance policies that improve the lives of veterans, service members, and their families.

The Post is also proud to partner with organizations including the San Luis Obispo County Veterans Service Office, the San Luis Obispo Vet Center, New Life K9s, Central Coast Vets Helping Vets, and Central Coast Honor Flight. These partnerships help connect veterans with valuable resources, support services, and opportunities for engagement.

The dedication of Post 2814 members is reflected in the organization’s continued success within the VFW. Throughout the year, the Post participates in programs that promote membership growth, community service, youth engagement, and veteran advocacy. These efforts contribute toward earning the VFW’s prestigious All-State and All-American distinctions. Post 2814 is proud to have achieved both honors last year and has once again earned All-State and All-American recognition this year, demonstrating the commitment, consistency, and hard work of its members.

As summer begins, VFW Post 2814 remains steadfast in its mission of service, remembrance, and community connection. The Post welcomes veterans, families, and community members to join its events and programs as it continues honoring those who have served and supporting those who continue to serve our nation.
