Voices of the VFW: VFW Post 2814 reflects on busy August of service and community

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2814 in Atascadero had another active month of service, fellowship, and community involvement as August brought opportunities to support veterans, strengthen partnerships, and welcome new faces to the Post.

The month began with the Post's regular business meeting, where members continued planning upcoming programs and discussing ways to better serve veterans and the local community. Members were encouraged to attend and take an active role in shaping the future of the Post.

Throughout August, Post 2814 continued its tradition of weekly activities that brought veterans, families, and community members together. Tuesday evening dinners, Wednesday burger lunches, Thursday karaoke nights, and Friday meals provided opportunities for fellowship while helping support Post programs and operations.

The Post was also honored to pay tribute to fellow veteran Gary Sizemore during a memorial service at Pine Mountain Cemetery. Born on January 25, 1950, in Vienna, Austria, to Robert and Matilda Sizemore, Gary came to the United States in 1962 and graduated from Seaside High School in 1968. He later enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served with the 101st Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. As a final expression of gratitude for his service to our nation, VFW Post 2814 was privileged to present the United States flag to his wife, Jeanie Sizemore, during the memorial service.

Another highlight of the month was the Post's continued support of the California Army National Guard's 223rd Regional Training Institute during its annual Soldier and Family Readiness Group (SFRG) summer barbecue at Camp San Luis Obispo. Post members and the Auxiliary were proud to once again assist with the event, demonstrating the VFW's ongoing commitment to supporting today's service members and their families.

As the nation celebrated its 250th anniversary throughout 2026, Post 2814 remained dedicated to honoring the legacy of those who served while inspiring the next generation through community outreach, patriotism, and volunteer service.

Everything we accomplish is because of our volunteers, members, Auxiliary, and community partners. Their commitment allows us to continue serving veterans while building a stronger community here in North County. We invite everyone to stop by, meet our members, and see what the VFW is all about.
