As fall arrives on the Central Coast, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2814 in Atascadero continues its commitment to veterans, their families, and the North County community.
September was highlighted by the Post’s observance of the anniversary of September 11, 2001. Post members, Auxiliary members, families, and community members gathered on September 11 for a tribute followed by a community barbecue. It was an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives, recognize the first responders and service members who answered the call, and reflect on the unity our nation demonstrated following that tragic day.
September also brought another opportunity for service through the Ruck for Resilience on September 26. Events such as these reinforce the importance of supporting veterans while strengthening the relationships between the Post and the community it serves.
Post 2814 also observed National POW/MIA Recognition Day, honoring the service members who were prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action. The observance serves as a reminder that the United States continues its effort to recover and account for as many of our service members as possible from all theaters of combat. Their families, sacrifices, and enduring hope remain a solemn part of our nation’s responsibility and remembrance.
Post 2814 continues to invest in its home on Morro Road. Following the completion of the major roof project earlier this year, attention is turning toward additional improvements to the Post. Priorities include needed kitchen refrigeration repairs and future improvements to the hall. These projects are part of an ongoing effort to maintain a welcoming, functional gathering place for veterans and the community for years to come.
The Post is also encouraging local students to participate in the VFW’s annual Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy scholarship programs. Patriot’s Pen is open to students in grades 6-8, while Voice of Democracy is open to students in grades 9-12. These programs give young people an opportunity to share their thoughts on patriotism, citizenship, and our nation while competing for recognition and scholarships.
As October begins, Post 2814 is already looking ahead to Veterans Day and the many opportunities the coming months will bring to recognize and serve those who wore our nation’s uniform. The Post will also honor our own comrade, Major Deborah Claffey, whose service and dedication remain an important part of our Post’s history and legacy.
Community involvement remains an important part of everything we do. Whether you are a veteran interested in learning more about the VFW, a community member looking for an opportunity to volunteer, or simply someone who would like to stop by and support the Post, our doors are open.
VFW Post 2814 is located at 9555 Morro Road in Atascadero. The Post hosts Tuesday evening dinners at 6 p.m. and Wednesday burgers and brats from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., along with other special events throughout the month.
From honoring the past to serving today’s veterans and preparing for the future, VFW Post 2814 remains proud to be part of the Atascadero and North County community.
Veterans helping veterans. Community supporting veterans. Together, we continue the mission.
